Raising Josh involves a whole host of necessary adaptations. He’s most successful when there is consistency and routine, and the right items, in the right color, precise words used in conversation, advanced notice of events, acceptable textures in clothing and food, and most important to keeping the peace…all things must be done his way. Impossible, right? Now imagine being his little sister.
Bug is almost three years younger than Josh, and she’s called him ‘Buddy’ from the time she started talking. Through the years, I’ve seen her adjust and modify her behavior, because she knew it would lower his frustration level. Uh, I’m the adult here! And yet, she understood to do that before I did.
Things happened!!
I’ve heard stories from teachers and other students that make Bug sound more like a body guard than a little sister. She stood up for him, no matter the size of the jerk face she was defending him against.
She’s been there for him, even while she was figuring out who she was. I’m not sure how this little girl made sense of life lived with the unbending demands of her older, autistic brother? But she did. Without alcohol!!
Josh is lucky to have Bug in his life, and she’s said the same about him. (Insert my big fat mom-baby tears of emotional pride!!) I’ve seen her become his protector, his cheerleader, and ultimately, his friend.
