Josh started college this week. He’s started a few times before, and we’re all hoping this time the outcome will be different for him…and will conclude with a piece of paper that says, “yay, you did it”!
He’s super smart, so the classes themselves aren’t what tripped him up in the past. It was all the necessary interaction with other people, and rules that weren’t being followed by a few select students, with no consequences. Oh, rules are made to be followed my friend…and if exceptions are made without reasonable purpose, ALL school work will stop immediately!
I totally get it. I’m a Libra…the sign with the scales as the symbol that represent fairness and equality. The difference is that I can move beyond the instance of the big fat jerks getting away with not following the rules. I don’t like that it happens, and occasionally I do something about it…which sometimes involves my middle finger speaking its’ mind…but I have the ability to let it go. Josh does not.
Here’s the issue. I can see something and say that someone is a jerk, and move past it, whereas Josh will see a system that does not work, and therefor he cannot function within that perception. Do you see the difference?
He’s nicer than me. In the past, he hasn’t yelled at someone with his middle finger, he shut down, he withdrew…literally.
This time, he says it feels different. He says he’s ready. I believe him.
He’s going to school to get a degree in communication…a person with Autism getting a degree in Communication…that might be the best version of flipping the middle finger that I have ever seen!! That’s my boy.
