The Beatles got it right in their song “All Together Now”. Okay, the Beatles got most things right, but this song is about including everyone, and that’s just cool. True, they were probably high as a kite because it was 1969…but still, when their sentiment is emulated, the opportunity for lives to be changed is humongous.
Inclusion doesn’t just help people with disabilities, it helps everyone. And because every person is more than their diagnosis, we all have something to offer those around us.
I’m not suggesting a comeback of the Nerd Revolution, and that everyone should get a participation trophy. I’m talking about the fact that everyone should get to play…or work…get invited…and be included. Easy peasy!
I’ve had birthday parties for Josh, and no one showed up. I’ve seen him get ignored by his peers. I knew of events taking place and he was the only one excluded. I also saw him blossom when he was invited, acknowledged, and included. It was life changing. For both of us.
The next time you have the opportunity to do so, include someone that’s different than you. Not out of sympathy, but with openness…because when it’s all said and done, you just might be the one with a healed heart.
I’ll be over here dusting off my trophies.
