Autism often comes with a heaping helping of anxiety. About everything! That buzzing, intrusive, never letting up companion, can derail the best of intentions.
Work life for someone on the spectrum can feel exhausting, and for more significant reasons than the ones us neurotypicals whine about. By us, I mean me. And everyone that’s ever had their lunch stolen out of the work fridge. Thats totally legit whine, stomp, and complain worthy.
But still, it doesn’t touch the hours long intensity felt by someone with autism.
People with autism are often fantastic at hiding constantly present anxiety when they need to. Like when they’re on the job. The stress and sensory issues don’t wait to kick in until they punch out for the day, so it can be a battle of endurance for 40 plus hours a week. And then, time for decompression is imperative. Kind of like when “we” go out for drinks after work to wind down, but also nothing like that at all. Because “we’re” not invited.
