Josh is thirty-one years old, and today, for the very first time ever, he’s seeing an Autism Specialist. He’s seen people with autism experience, was diagnosed originally by the the head of child psychiatry at Walter Reed Medical Hospital, and has benefitted by working with countless professionals through the years. But there’s been a piece missing that I’ve struggled to find for him…the ever elusive, Autism Specialist.
A doctor told me one time that Josh struggles with life skills. I said “he can get in line behind both of us”! The doctor wasn’t amused. It’s okay, I knew what to do – I’m used to blank stares. I winked at him. Awkward silence.
It’s not like you can go to the store and pick up some life skills. If you’re running low on organization, self regulation, task management, or social skills, the dollar store doesn’t carry them. I’ve looked. While I was there I did score eight pairs of hot pink reading glasses…cuz they cost a dollar! It sort of makes up for that fact that they sell pig skins. Uh, no it doesn’t. Gross!
Here’s the deal: I don’t care what a person’s title is, I’d just like to have someone in Josh’s life that can help him learn to cope in the kinds of situations where he notoriously doesn’t. So he can feel better! I’m open to whatever that looks like, and I’m hopeful.
Now, leave me alone so I can eat my one dollar Funions.
