I got to talk to a mom today that co-authored a book about autism. Twelve moms contributed…each with a story all their own, each with a child on the autism spectrum, and each sharing their experience and knowledge. A collaboration like this is unusual, and that in part, is what makes it relevant.
Parenting a child or adult with autism can feel isolating. It’s not the life I envisioned when I found out I was pregnant with Josh. I pictured a growing family full of adventure and love, and I got that, it’s just a different kind of adventure that involves doctors and therapists and a TSS and IEP’s. The love part of the equation is much, much easier. That happened the first time I heard his heartbeat.
Mom’s with kiddos on the spectrum are a tough breed. We might get knocked down, but we don’t stay there. The women that wrote this book sure didn’t. They are innovators, change makers, and supporters of those of us going through similar situations. We might not need our hands held…but it’s nice to have a beacon guiding the way. This book is that bright light.
