Depression squishes the joy out of the most joyous occasions. If the occasion is just so-so to begin with, it just squishes. Watching my son Josh get squished is a hard thing to witness.
There’s a new to us therapy called TMS. It stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. It’s typically used when other depression treatments haven’t been effective. Josh has a virtual telemedicine appointment this week with the psychiatrist that will be in charge of his treatment plan.
Did you ever see “One Flew Over the CooCoo’s Nest”? I did! Damn if I’m going to hand him over to Nurse Rached and a string of quacks to shock him into changing his behavior.
Turns out, it’s a magnet that is placed over the left frontal lobe, and it’s the strength of a typical MRI, and makes the same type of sound. I have a good friend that’s a Chinese Medicine Practitioner that uses magnets in her work, so I’m aware of the benefits. Now I can calm the heck down!
I’m not calm. Josh seems to be declining, and he just lays in bed, not able to focus or function. I knew this was serious when he stopped eating! He’s ALWAYS hungry!! Until now. On the other hand, I have no problem eating everything in sight.
I’m hopeful that Josh will experience healing and comforting energy as he undergoes this new type of treatment. In the meantime, I’ll be eating for two!
