Autism is about intense sensory episodes, and the processing of those experiences. For Josh, an additional frustration is the inability to readily identify what’s happening to him physically.
For me, the frustration is always having to be flexible with my expectations of him because it’s never clear how he’s going to be feeling before “that moment”. You know…that moment of a scheduled doctors appointment, trip to the store, college class, or time to do chores.
He is like organized routine, mixed with surprise improv! And I have a front row seat.
I don’t know how he feels, but I can tell when it’s overwhelming. He’s better at understanding how emotions or mental discomfort feel in his body than when he has actual physical ailments. When he doesn’t feel well physically, he gets stuck. Then, I get stuck trying to help him get unstuck. Then, we’re both stuck trying to figure out what feels real versus what turns out to be a passing feeling.
No one needs that much feeling. Ever! Do you feel me?
