My autistic son Josh has worked very hard to be able to “gear up”when it’s time to engage with others. Whether it’s family get togethers or venturing out into the land of neurotypicals, he has figured out how to prepare for social interaction.
So, he’s figured out what to do in public, and knows how to prepare for going into various public situations. What he doesn’t seem to know how to do is “gear up” for his home life experiences. Before life skills can happen, he needs to be aware that life skills need to happen.
So, what if he takes the same skills that he’s learned to be successful on the outside, and now applies those to life on the inside? Not the life skills themselves, but the mental and emotional preparation that it takes to get him facing the right direction, and has his feet solidly on the starting line. Bang!
I’m kind of feeling like a genius. I might even be a super genius. I’m calling Mensa.
