Good People

December 13, 2018 by Sonya King 1 Comment

Good People. Pictured is a drawing of Josh wearing a ball cap that reads "Mr. Kleanze". He is smiling and has just made a clean area on a soapy window with a squeegee. ~ Clearly Muddled Blog ~

I’ve met a lot of good people because Josh has Autism. There have been a lot of jerk faces too…but anyone that has a child that dares to be different knows about them.  The good-hearted people though, they’re the ones that change lives. For us, they’ve come in the form of teachers, doctors, counselors, neighbors, and recently, employers.  This last category is the latest to alter our trajectory: from uncertainty and stagnation, to clarity and optimism.

The big question that used to sneak in and ruin my day was, ‘what was going to happen to Josh when his dad and I are gone’?  He’s fortunate because he’s got a sister that has said she will take care of him when that time comes.  But, as someone that knows exactly what that’s like, I don’t want that responsibility to be hers. I do appreciate and LOVE the connection they have and am eternally grateful that she will make sure he’s okay. Get it? Eternally, because I’ll be gone! Thank you, I’ll be here all week…try the veal!

I want more for them, better for them, and easier for them. We need a magic wand!  Fortunately, Josh has just been given one. Well, it’s a pressure washing wand and a squeegee, but I’m telling you, they’re magical.  Josh has a job, and his employers not only understand the “differences” that accompany autism, they celebrate those differences.  If you’re so inclined, can I get an Amen?

Good people, doing good things, because their hearts led them to do it. His bosses are earning high score this time around, for sure! Mr. Kleanze Professional Cleaning Services is where Josh works. It has the components needed for him to live the life he wants, and in time, the way that he wants. Last, but not least, the big fat chunk that’s been missing so far… drum roll please…he can finally envision living independently. Someday.

Josh is beginning to get faraway glimpses of the future possibilities. Oh, wait, that’s me getting glimpses of how I will renovate his bedroom into a winery.

(Just a note: “Try the veal” is just an old comic saying. Please don’t try veal! Ever! You know what you could try? Brussels sprouts! Please eat them all, so I don’t have to ever see them again. Signed – this vegan.)

Leave us a note if you like this episode! Love to hear from you.

About the Josh has Autism Podcast: I never know what he’s going to say. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s insightful, and sometimes it just doesn’t make any sense at all. So, of course we should record it all, and call it a podcast!
