The idea is that as you grow older, you also begin to act like a grown up, but that looks different from person to person. Some people are financially responsible, and some forget to pay the bills. Some take hygiene seriously, and others are living examples of Pig-Pen. And some people take responsibility for their actions, and others become politicians.
My point is that adulthood has a wide girth and a far swinging pendulum. It sways from free-spirit all the way to conformist, and it smacks everyone in the middle along the way. The rules of adulthood are not set in stone, so most of us move through it like we’re life size Weeble-Wobbles.
I’m responsible for an adult human with autism. The guidelines for that don’t have a very high thread count. There are holes where I wish for solidarity, and frays where I’d hoped for smooth edges. Helping him grow up has made me grow up, and I don’t appreciate that at all!
Nothing is as hard as helping Josh become a grown up. I’m in the weeds, man! And all I have is soggy tinder, so it seems impossible to light a fire under his butt!
Something has to stick soon though, because I feel like if we don’t start moving forward, our lives are gonna be like an abandoned building covered with kudzu. Pretty soon you can’t even tell what it was.
