Autism does not present itself the same in all people. It doesn’t even present itself the same, day to day or hour to hour, in one person! If you’re looking for consistency, you ain’t gonna find it here, baby! Unless you’re looking for consistent inconsistency: because if that’s the case, you just hit the jackpot!
I’m not talking about a person just changing their mind. That’s expected, you know, because of being human and all. I’m talking about an abrupt change in pace, desire, progress, and functioning, that seems to come out of nowhere. I’ve seen that inconsistency with Josh, over and over and over, on a consistent basis. FYI: I’m pretty sure that impossible pattern is why wine was invented.
Once the idea to stop doing something is in Josh’s head, there is no amount of encouragement that will get him going again. And because communication and awareness can sometimes be a barrier, the reason as to the halt in forward motion is most often, never fully understood…by myself or Josh.
I’ve had plenty of conversations with doctors about the forward/backward, start/stop scenario that we live in. Guess what – they don’t know what to do about it either!! It’s an ongoing issue with a code that hasn’t been cracked yet.
I do my best to not view these experiences as good bad right or wrong, but they are just plain and simple, freaking exhausting. So, I have some wine, get some sleep, and wait for the next step forward. I heard Josh say to the television… “it’s an Ox you Moron”! Consistent inconsistency is not for the weak my friends.
