Life skills are the things that, when done well, keep our lives running smoothly. They are the daily responsibilities that keep us from being gross. Some of the basic self-care necessities are brushing teeth, taking a shower daily, and wearing clean clothes instead of the foul- smelling ones rumpled in the corner. Really just the common-sense stuff of everyday life.
I have no idea why self-care, foul-smelling, and common-sense all need a hyphen. It wasnt planned that the descriptive themselves all need a break when it comes to this subject. I feel your pain, hyphen.
Josh says that he doesnt intentionally forget to do laundry, or brush his teeth, or keep his immediate surroundings clean, he says he just never thinks about it. I dont know how to help. Weve used lists, charts, rewards, consequences, prompting, encouraging, reminding, threatening, begging, and STILL have not come up with an answer to help this dude!
The reality is that Josh is a genius but seems unable to grasp or understand the importance of those things that fall in the life skills category. Its baffling, and frustrating, and I dont know why some things stick and some dont.
Josh is smarter than me…I learn a lot from him daily. It is a strange experience though, to live with someone that seems to have no limit to his knowledge yet can-not master his own hygiene regimen. Hyphen and I agree that this is a peculiar predicament.
