Everyone can use a mentor! When Josh was growing up, we didn’t have anyone that had gone through what we were dealing with, and he didn’t have anyone in his life that had autism. We had therapy. We had tons of therapy! Turns out, I needed more “inner work” than the rest of the family. I did the work though…and learned to calmly tell judgmental parents without a child on the spectrum, Namaste, %&tches!
When Josh was a little guy it seemed like every day came with overwhelming struggles, and because we were learning about autism on the fly, we needed guidance. Guidance to know how to provide the best opportunity for him to thrive and feel good about himself. A mentor would have been welcomed with open arms.
Josh is an adult now and is mentoring groups of middle schoolers and young adults. It’s great for them to see a role model that has autism and drives, dates, works, and has taken college courses, along with a plethora of other successes. It’s important because those things are not a given for someone on the spectrum.
I’ve heard it said that when you know better, you do better. There’s also something to be said about learning by living. Josh has done both. He’s taken what he’s gleaned through his years and is passing on to others. His autism and personality make him the perfect mentor.
As for me, I just got a referral letter from my doctor…he’s sending me to a therapist. Apparently, my Namaste is broken. Again.
