Everything is changing at warp speed, and because change is a replacement for what used to be, it always comes with some sort of loss. It’s not always negative, but when you have autism, it takes a couple extra beats for it to make sense…and then the feels kick in.
In the past several months, loss has shown up for Josh in the form of a cross country relocation, moving away from friends and family, his Nana’s failing health, his sister’s separation and impending divorce, the death of a friend, and now, social distancing.
PSA: Josh is fine with social distancing. In fact, he invented it.
P.S. PSA: It’s always the process that upsets Josh, not the result.
Finality is concrete, and everything moving towards that point is not. Change equals all the moving parts, and it creates an enormous amount of stress for a majority of people on the autism spectrum.
If you’ve never understood why someone with Autism could feel fear, anxiety, frustration, and self-preservation so intensely that it leads to isolation…look up…look around you…is COVID-19 the boogeyman, or is it your emotion and insecurity that dictate your reaction?
Like this virus, Autism is real. It’s the process. Unlike those that hoard and take advantage, those on the spectrum would never think of harming another. Rather, they would give you their last of whatever you need.
So…tell me again…who has a disability?
