We’re moving. It’s exciting and terrifying!
Simple changes can throw Josh off, so picking up and moving from Florida to Virginia has the potential to shut him down for a long period of time. I’m not guessing here, it’s exactly what happened the last time we moved, five years ago. Before that move, we lived in the same house for 18 years. He was comfortable there. Now, we’ve got to be smart, supportive, and gentle as we help prepare him for this huge change.
This is a massive job…I need candy.
The unknown is usually hard, but for someone who only thrives when things are concrete, unbending, and always predictable, it’s nearly impossible not to get overwhelmed with anxiety. Josh will be leaving what has become familiar and faced again with a world that’s uncertain. That’s when life gets difficult.
Same, same, same, that’s what works. And that’s the total and complete opposite of moving 14 hours away from where we are now. So, we do the only thing we can…we talk and walk through every aspect of what we’re planning. We include him in discussions and decisions. And we find things in the new location that would benefit him and add to his well-being. He’s quick to point out that a new car would help a lot.
Okay, first, it is so freaking cool that he understands how to use this situation to his advantage. That’s beyond cool…that’s success! That’s him understanding the nuance well enough to ask for a new car! And second, the answer is, no!
Big fat stinking side note: driving is something that we were told he’d never do…along with never using sarcasm…or understanding nuance. And we all see how that turned out! I could do without the sarcasm though. Really, I could.
