~ Clearly Muddled Blog~
Sometimes, right in the middle of Josh plugging along in the right direction, he puts on the brakes, and stops…for no apparent reason. It seems to come out of nowhere, with no sign that the forward momentum was coming to an abrupt, screeching halt. He shuts down, says he feels heavy, doesn’t want to do anything or see anyone. It’s depression.
It looks different than when he withdrawals due to Autism. I can see that in his eyes, and it’s typically precipitated by sensory overload. Places that are too loud, too bright, confusing, chaotic, or stressful can create the need to get out of that scenario as quickly as possible, and retreat to a quiet, soft space.
While depression puts Josh out of commission for a while, stressors related to Autism cause his anxiety to spike to a point of non-functioning, until he finds his way back again.
It takes a strong person to live like this…it ain’t for the weak or weary.
