Why don’t people get the things done that they say they want to get done? A better question might be how do people ever get anything done, given the busyness going on around us all the time! For someone with autism it’s even harder because the level of input is felt a gazillion times what neurotypicals feel. And that’s a hard true number, that I just made up.
There are noises and distractions that take most people away from what they “should” be doing. But, add in the abundance of every single nuance of all information taken in…the change in sound, smell, sensation, movement…and then cranked up beyond capacity, and then try and get something done! If that’s hard to read, try living it!!
It’s not laziness. It’s not lacking motivation. It IS lacking processing, organization, and awareness. It takes an enormous effort for someone on the spectrum to look at the big picture and break it down into doable steps. It can feel so overwhelming that shutting down is the best way of coping.
I’m not autistic, but I understand shutting down when things feel too heavy. I’m pretty sure Ninkasi, the patron goddess of beer, understood it as well. Here’s to you, my favorite lady of history, and all those that find it difficult to accomplish the task at hand. Chug!
