~ Clearly Muddled Blog ~
A couple of days ago Josh and I were walking past an apartment and heard a guy threatening and hitting a woman. We heard him throw her against the door. In those moments that left me shaking with a rush of adrenaline, Josh was the calm amidst the storm.
I started pounding on the door and yelling to the guy to leave her alone, and then let her know I was calling the police. Josh had hit the record button on his phone.
When my phone wouldn’t connect, he called the police, told them what was happening, and where. Let me repeat that: Josh recorded the assault and then called for help.
Living with autism leads Josh to have a difficult time in a variety of situations. Things like sounds at a certain level or frequency, strong smells, brightness, having to make decisions, needing to act fast, and sometimes things we can’t even label, all have the potential to interfere with him communicating effectively.
It was amazing to see him so calm and with such clarity. Something in that moment caused Josh to go to a different level of his being. I don’t understand it. I wish we could bottle it. Steady and confident, he showed up when a stranger was experiencing an emergency. He’s like a super hero. He’s my hero.
Whoomp, there he is!
