One thing Autism is not, is flexible. It makes no difference what plans have been made, when Autism says, “I don’t think so”, the brakes are put on and it’s time to make new plans.
Sometimes, I’m just not in the mood to have to change plans. Occasionally, I like to do what I want, when I want, in the way that I want. And now and then, I enjoy having the result resemble my initial vision. Ha-ha…that was all just for me! I’ve learned the rules! I know the ropes! What I want takes the backseat to what Autism needs, every time.
Why? Because it’s easier for me to adapt, adjust, and regroup than to stand firm and contribute to certain anxiety, stress, and physical pain that rides shotgun to Autism. The difference that I’m talking about is on one side being inconvenienced…and cranky, on the other is becoming overwhelmed and debilitated. That’s why!
The tricky part about this type of preliminary or reactionary behavior seen in Autism, is that it looks so much like a multitude of other adjectives. It can easily be mistaken for negative, deliberate acts, rather than the deep shutting down that it is.
Imagine that. Imagine what that must feel like. Imagine feeling like that and having to accommodate someone else. I don’t have to imagine that, because I see it in action, often. That’s when I know it’s time to make new plans.
