Medication is not always the answer…but sometimes it is. With a diagnosis of Autism and ADD, no other modality or treatment seems to help Josh as much, at this time in his life.
So, when it was time to pick up his medication and the pharmacy didn’t have it, we talked to the contact in his doctors office, and were told that because it had been prescribed all this time by the psychiatrist, the doctor was not able to fill it without having the documents supporting the necessity of the medication.
Josh has been taking this particular medication for a number of months. His psychiatrist has taken a turn towards alternative treatments and no longer writes scripts for western medication. So, while she supports him continuing that medication, she will no longer prescribe it. Doctors are people and change direction and course that suite their evolution as humans. I applaud and encourage their self awareness.
This change and the confusion it created put Josh right smack in the middle of a crisis, that would have derailed his day, week, and probably month, if it wasn’t for the people in his life stepping in, and sorting it all out. Because we’ve practiced these kinds of scenarios, and because he is familiar with this doctors office and pharmacy, he was able to stay calm (outwardly) and ask for help. He got it…from every direction. The primary doctor and her office manager, the psychiatrist, pharmacist, and me. He did exactly what we’ve practiced in the “what if” scenario, and was able to get his medication. Whew!
Sometimes the cracks we fall through are more like giant craters. And sometimes, just before we hit the bottom, we’re scooped up by a net of kindness and compassion.
