My autistic son is brilliant! When it comes time to write down the things that bounce around in that huge brain of his, he gets stuck. The ideas are racing, but he can’t move.
Writing assignments were difficult when he was in school because if it didn’t feel authentic, he wasn’t going to do it. I’m pretty sure he never described it that way, but that exactly what it was. If it wasn’t true to who he was, it wasn’t going to happen. He wouldn’t say no, but he would definitely do no.
Autism isn’t the lack of, it’s the abundance of. Taming all the senses that are operating in high gear all the time is an enormous challenge. Taking what’s known and felt on the inside and moving them out for others to hear, see, and experience is foreign. And ridiculous. And unnecessary. So Josh thinks.
Except, the rest of us, the ones out here, the ones not so clear on what’s authentic and what’s not, are better off glimpsing that brilliance when it’s shared. Write it down!
