Wayne Dyer said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. That basically means that your experience can change, based on where you place your focus.
How do you change focus when you’ve got a kid with autism? I don’t know, but I can tell you that if you don’t take time for yourself, and do things that make you happy, you’ll get stuck in a cycle that’ll wear you down until you’re a puddle of unhappiness. The kind of unhappy that candy can’t even fix.
I’ve been putting Josh first for so long that I became accustomed to doing without…to settling for less than what I wanted…for making decisions based on his needs and well-being and acting like mine had to wait in line – and feeling like I didn’t have a choice. Here’s the important part in regards to that arrangement …he didn’t ask me to do any of it. I thought I had to. I thought it came with being his mom.
Recently, that has shifted. Maybe because of my age (you know, the age where women stop caring what others think), or his age, or opportunities for me that have shown up, or maybe I’m just tired of feeling stuck. Whatever the catalyst, I’m now looking at things in a new way, and it’s liberating. It feels like eating dessert first…every freaking meal!
Bottom line? A shift in perception changes everything. And candy is delicious.
