My autistic son has lived with me for 32 years! That’s about 10 more than I was anticipating! Seriously? Yes.
But, a monumental event took place last week…Josh moved in with his best friend (and ex brother in law). What does this mean? It means that it’s time for him to see what he can do on his own, without my constant prompting and redirecting. It also means that I’m a nervous wreck wondering if he’s okay over there, while simultaneously enjoying this amazing new place called the empty nest.
This opportunity just kind of unfolded on its own, and it’s time for a bit of separation for me and Josh. I worry about what will happen to him when I’m not around anymore, and this is the perfect time and opportunity for him to experience some independence…while still having a ginormous safety net to catch him if he falls.
It’s not expected that he’s going to all the sudden have a handle on life skills, or staying on track, or remembering to do what needs to be done. This is an endeavor to help him feel better about himself. To really see what he can do and what he needs help with. It’s time.
It might last, and it might not. Either way, it was a good move.
